How to Master Parallel Parking with Confidence

Vasilis Mountziaris — Head Instructor02 Φεβ 20264 min read

Parallel parking is often one of the maneuvers that causes anxiety for new drivers. With clear reference points and guided practice, the maneuver becomes much easier and well-controlled.

1. Parallel Alignment: Stop alongside the vehicle ahead, maintaining a safe lateral distance. Use your vehicle's relative position to the adjacent car and kerb as a visual reference point.

2. Reversing Initiation: Engage reverse gear, perform a 360° visual check around the vehicle, and start rolling slowly while smoothly steering toward the kerb.

3. Position Verification: As the vehicle reaches the target position, straighten the steering wheel and continue reversing smoothly while checking mirrors and surrounding traffic.

4. Final Placement: Smoothly counter-steer to bring the car parallel to the kerb. Complete the maneuver by verifying safe spacing from the kerb and surrounding vehicles.

Practical Exam Standards: In the Category B practical driving test, parking must be executed in up to four movements, ending at a distance of no more than 35 cm from the kerb, with zero mounting of the sidewalk and zero contact with adjacent vehicles.

At our driving school, we focus on genuine mechanical comprehension and situational awareness rather than memorizing rigid tricks. Reference points are adapted to each vehicle and driver, helping you execute the maneuver with safety and authentic confidence.
